Extension Permissions

When installing the Sniffer browser extension, you are asked to grant certain permissions. Understanding these permissions helps you make an informed decision about installation.

  • Access to Website Data: Sniffer requires permission to read and modify data on websites you visit. This permission is necessary for the extension to display the Sniffer sidebar, capture screenshots, and place feedback pins on webpage elements. Sniffer only activates on websites where you explicitly enable it.
  • Access to Tabs: The extension needs permission to access browser tabs to identify which website you are viewing and to capture the current URL for bug reports.
  • Storage: Sniffer stores your login session and preferences locally in the browser. This allows you to remain logged in between browser sessions and saves your sidebar settings.
  • Notifications: If enabled, Sniffer can display browser notifications to alert you about new bugs, comments, or task assignments. This permission is optional and can be managed in your browser settings.
  • Clipboard Access: Some features, such as copying task links or screenshot data, may require clipboard access. This permission allows Sniffer to copy information to your clipboard when you use these features.

Sniffer takes privacy seriously and only uses these permissions to provide the functionality described. The extension does not collect or transmit personal browsing data unrelated to your Sniffer projects.

Logging In via Extension

After installing the extension, you need to log in to connect it to your Sniffer account.

  • Step 1: Click the Sniffer icon in your browser toolbar. The extension popup opens, displaying a login prompt.
  • Step 2: Enter your Sniffer account email address and password. These are the same credentials you use to log in to the Sniffer web dashboard.
  • Step 3: Click “Log In” or “Sign In” to authenticate. The extension communicates with Sniffer servers to verify your credentials.
  • Step 4: If your account has two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, you are prompted to enter the verification code from your authenticator app or SMS.
  • Step 5: Upon successful login, the extension displays a list of projects you have access to. Select the project you want to work with.
  • Step 6: Navigate to the website associated with your selected project. Click the Sniffer icon or use the keyboard shortcut to activate the Sniffer sidebar on the page.
  • Staying Logged In: The extension remembers your login session, so you do not need to log in every time you open your browser. Your session remains active until you explicitly log out or your session expires due to security policies.

Switching Accounts: If you have multiple Sniffer accounts, you can log out of the current account by clicking the Sniffer icon, accessing the extension menu, and selecting “Log Out.” You can then log in with different credentials.

Troubleshooting Login Issues: If you cannot log in, verify that you are using the correct email and password. Use the “Forgot Password” link on the Sniffer website to reset your password if needed. Ensure your browser allows cookies and that no browser extensions are blocking the login request.
